چکیده

Chemical maps of garnet are the key to understand the tectonometamorphic evolution of the metamorphic rocks. They provide useful information on element distribution, diffusion, and mechanical truncation of crystal. In the Himalayas, studies on ultra-high pressure rocks denudated along the Main Central Thrust (MCT) revealed the great displacement along this intracontinental shear zone. Pêcher (1989) suggested the difference in thickness of hangingwall as a result of large erosion along the thrust, and Macfarlane (1993) discussed the various thermal structures within the hangingwall. However, lateral variations in footwall have been poorly investigated although inverted thermal gradient has been often discussed. In order to clarify the variation of tectonometamophic events along the MCT, garnet crystals within pelitic rocks were investigated in detail. In the central Nepal Himalayas, Annapurna area and Kathmandu nappe are suitable to study these variations. Estimated metamorphic temperatures just above the MCT are different in two areas: 600-700 °C in Annapurna area (Kaneko et al. 1995) and 550-600 °C in Kathmandu nappe (Johnson et al. 2001). These variations are interpreted as different positions within hangingwall; Kathmandu nappe corresponds to frontal zone whereas Annapurna area to root zone.

Mechanical analysis of controls on strain partitioning in the Himalayas of central Nepal

We present a mechanical analysis of the problem of slip partitioning between the major thrust systems in a collisional range. We focus on two structures in the Himalayas of central Nepal : the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) and the Main Central Thrust (MCT). We use finite-element modeling to test the influence of various parameters, such as friction coefficients and surface processes, and we inves...

Evidence for a great medieval earthquake (~1100 A.D.) in the central Himalayas, Nepal.

The Himalayan orogen has produced three thrust earthquakes with moment magnitude (Mw) 7.8 to 8.5 during the past century, yet no surface ruptures associated with these great earthquakes have been documented. Here, we present paleoseismic evidence from east central Nepal that, since approximately 700 A.D., a single earthquake ruptured the Frontal Thrust fault at approximately 1100 A.D., with a s...

Along-strike changes in Himalayan thrust geometry: Topographic and tectonic discontinuities in western Nepal

Geodetic and seismologic studies support a tectonic model for the central Himalaya wherein ~2 cm/yr of Indo-Asian convergence is accommodated along the primary décollement under the range, the Main Himalayan thrust. A steeper midcrustal ramp in the Main Himalayan thrust is commonly invoked as driving rapid rock uplift along a range-parallel band in the Greater Himalaya. This tectonic model, dev...

Geochronologic constraints across the Main Central Thrust shear zone, Bhagirathi River (NW India): Implications for Himalayan tectonics

The Main Central Thrust shear zone is the dominant crustal thickening feature in the Himalayas, largely responsible for the extreme relief and mass wasting of the range. Along the Bhagirathi River in NW India, the Main Central Thrust is several kilometers thick and separates high-grade gneisses of the Greater Himalayan Crystallines from Lesser Himalayan metasedimentary rocks. Th-Pb ion micropro...

Mesozoic basin inversion in Central Alborz, evidence from the evolution of Taleqan-Gajereh-Lar paleograben

This paper presents evidence on Mesozoic inversion of basin bounding faults within the Taleqan-Gajereh-Lar Paleograben (TGLP) in Central Alborz Range. For this purpose, well documented stratigraphy data across the TGLP together with the new acquired structural data on the geometry and kinematics of the paleograben basin bounding faults are utilized. The TGLP has evolved through the Early and Mi...
